WHEREAS, Black History Month originated in 1915 with a national celebration of the 50th anniversary of emancipation, sponsored by the state of Illinois, to highlight progress since the end of slavery; and
WHEREAS, every U.S. president since 1976 has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month as a means to celebrate the achievements of black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history; and
WHEREAS, it is essential to recognize and celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of Black Americans throughout history, not only in February, but throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, we recognize and honor the contributions of Black leaders, educators and community members in °®ÆæÒÕ×ÊÔ´Õ¾ and Wisconsin, whose impact continues to shape our schools and communities; and
WHEREAS, °®ÆæÒÕ×ÊÔ´Õ¾ Unified is committed to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and respectful learning environment for all students; and
WHEREAS, observing Black History Month raises awareness of the ongoing struggle for freedom and equal opportunity, highlights racial barriers to educational equity, and supports efforts to close achievement gaps; and
WHEREAS, integrating Black history throughout the school year and across all subject areas enriches students’ understanding of U.S. history and contributes to a more accurate and inclusive education.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that °®ÆæÒÕ×ÊÔ´Õ¾ Unified School °®ÆæÒÕ×ÊԴվ’s Board of Education proclaims February as Black History Month, and encourages schools to engage in meaningful activities that reflect the spirit and purpose of this observance.
